The first one came when I had a pair of Iranian patrol boats attacking a Blue warship. Since they didn't have missiles, they had to close to guns range. However, during the maneuvering to close on the Blue ship, the Iranian ships had maneuvered to put the Blue ship directly between them -- each ship out of guns range of the Blue ship, but because they were in formation, the _formation_ closed on the Blue ship, sailing back and forth to keep the Blue ship centered on the formation, but never letting either ship get a shot off. The second quirk is more ugly. At one point, I had a formation of patrol craft closing on a formation of US warships escorting tankers. The Blue group had a FFG-7 way out to the northeast of the rest of the formation, and it was the closest ship to the incoming Iranian ships. The FFG-7 merrily shot up the Iranian formation with SM1MRs, while every time I selected 'Attack' for the Iranian ships, the program told me that all my weapons were out of range -- despite the fact that two of the ships had the same SM1MR missiles that the FFG-7 was shooting at them. The program apparently looks _only_ at the range to the center of the target formation when determining whether a weapon is in range or not, rather than at the individual ships in the formation. The result is that the computer will happily shoot at you, while you -- with exactly the same weapons -- are unable to shoot back. It's one thing to bias a scenario by giving the computer more or better platforms or weapons, but blatant game rigging like this destroys a lot of the enjoyment in the game. -- random sig #103: | The proton absorbs a photon and Sean Malloy | emits two morons, a lepton, a Navy Personnel Research & Development Center | boson, and a boson's mate. The first thing I now do not understand is that I realise that the sonar model has changed, but should the data also have changed? To explain, I will use an example: The first scenario of HDS - GIUK. Group ACS. There is a Type 22/1 FF. This is the best ASW platform in the group owing to its 1 CZ capable Type 2050 sonar. I normally have the passive sonar circle display on, and all the [active] sonars off in the group. The group was travelling at 10 kts. The passive sonar circle was REALLY small on the close up window, so I clicked on the unit, and asked for a [F]ull Report. The sonar was now rated for: 1.4 Passive range 2.0 Active range No CZ It stayed like this for some time. I noticed the other units in the formation all had their sonars at below spec levels too. OK, I thought, let's play with the speeds ... nothing much happened. However, later I noticed that the range circle had dramatically incresed. I went through the same process again: 12.5 Passive (Well beyond spec) 12.5 Active (Again well beyond spec) 1 CZ I even got a figure of 15 P/A at one stage. Has anyone else become aware of the same "anomoly" in their play? Or could they check and get back to me, please. It is hard enough to find subs with the new model, without this sort of problem. One good thing I have noticed is that the new helo-carried blip enhancer worked. They are the same internally, at least that's what they told me. I also asked if we were going to have all the same bugs to look forward to as the PC users did, but they said that both version wern't developed at the same time so we shouldn't have the same bugs. In addition, the computer (at least in Mac version 1.0.1, which is equivalent to PC version 1.2) won't automatically fire guns at surface targets that come within range the way it will fire missiles at such targets or fire guns at incoming aircraft. Once, I drove a few small Indonesian patrol boats up to the Indian Navy's largest ships (which were out of missiles) and sank them all with 3 inch guns without the computer firing at me even once. As for the range to target, I find it hard to believe the computer only checks the range to the center of the formation. I have been in many, many cases in which the computer will only let my planes, ships or subs fire at the ships closer to me in the enemy formation. This wouldn't be the case if Harpoon checked the range to the formation's center. I also doubt this has changed in PC version 1.3. I don't know what happened with those FFG-7s -- Harpoon has plenty of bugs that cause strange behavior -- but I don't think checking the range to the center of the formation or "blatant game rigging" has anything to do with it. greg ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Oct 92 11:43:46 EDT From: mckinney@athena.mit.edu Subject: (14) Land-based SAMs Message-Id: It should be noted that the guidance listings "SALH" in the land-based SAMs tables are incorrect. All laser-guided SAMs are actually beam-riders. As we all know, SALH guidance uses a seeker in the weapon's nose to home on reflected laser energy from the target. Laser beam-riders have their detectors mounted in the rear, often on the fin-tips, and look back at the launcher to keep themselves within the laser beam aimed (roughly) at the target. SALH will not work against aircraft because of the difficulty in keeping the laser spot on a rapidly moving, perhaps jinking, target. The spot would almost ineveitably slip off, causing the missile to lose lock. Why use laser beam-riding rather than normal radar beam-riding? Very simply, lasers can be made much smaller, so they are practical for even man-portable systems, and they producer a much narrower beam, which allows improved angular accuracy. Anyhow, you can't jam a laser beam ... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Oct 92 11:09:37 BST From: andrew.stevens@prg.oxford.ac.uk Subject: (15) Using Blip Enhance Message-Id: A recent message confirmed that the new blip enhancer modelling implemented in 1.3 works. I usually buy my Harpoon stuff from MacWarehouse but, for some reason, they don't have the IO battleset. Thanks in advance. (I have PC harpoon, V1.3.) I got the BB close enough to Kuwait City to fire the "big guns". I selected attack, picked the guns, and selected impact. The guns are listed as .30 ph, and ~250 damage. After I made the selection there was the expected explosion at the city. Then there was another, and another. The Wisconson continuted to fire until all the shells were expended. The entire barrage did 4% damage to Kuwait City. This seems doubly broken to me. First, I did not expect it to keep firing until I was out of shells. Second, I cannot imagine that the city has enought damage points so that all those hits did only 4% damage. Has anyone else seen this? Thoughts, guesses, wild speculations? Bret mckee@fc.hp.com ------------------------------ Date: 05 Nov 1992 09:32:53 +1100 From: bull@vaxc.cc.monash.edu.au Subject: (25) Amiga Editor Workaround Message-Id: For months I've been complaining about how unreliable the Scenerio Editor is on the Amiga. All this time I've half known what to do until 360 release a debugged version (from what I've heard, that won't be until Harpoon 2 is released). Last night it all came together. After being dumped out of the Editor for the 5th or 6th time, while working on a scenerio of less than 9K, I looked at the tooltypes for the Editor icon. The Editor has a process stack of 8000 bytes, so I tried to make it bigger but it wouldn't save a new stack size. In the end I went to the CLI and set a stack of 60000 bytes and then ran the Editor from the CLI. It still bombed while working on the 9K scenerio. I finally got the Editor to stay up with a stack of 100000 bytes. (I hate to think how big the stack has to be for a big scenerio, half a megabyte?) It's an overkill solution, give it so much RAM it can't possibly run out, but until 360 fixes the Editor, it's the only option that appears to work. This is not the only fault with the Editor. (It also violates Commodore's rules on accessing restricted sections of the OS memory map.) To give the editor a bigger stack either: Click on the icon once, then select the INFO menu item from the WorkBench screen. A window will appear and the stack size will be in the bottom left corner. Click on the stack to activate the cursor and delete the stack number, then type in a new stack number (a much bigger number). Then click on the SAVE option. I tried this myself under AmigaDos 1.3, but it didn't save the new stack size. OR: Start up a CLI shell. CD to the directory where the Editor is. Type STACK number (return). STACK 100000 seems to work, but I haven't tried this with a big scenerio so I can't make any promises. Now type EDITOR (return), and the Scenerio Editor will start up with a process stack of the size you just specified. I also tried EDITOR scenario-name but it made me go through the disk to select the BattleSet and then I had to force it to load my user scenerio, so it doesn't allow a scenerio name when it starts up. This doesn't fix the underlying problem, but so far, it appears to give the Editor enough space to make it useable. If 360 sees this, FIX THE SCENARIO EDITOR, PLEASE!!! ------------------------------ End of CZ Digest **************** From root@FICUS.CS.UCLA.EDU Mon Nov 23 13:43:27 1992 Received: by penzance.cs.ucla.edu (Sendmail 5.61c+YP/3.19ficus1) id AA18328; Mon, 23 Nov 92 13:43:27 -0800 Date: Mon, 23 Nov 92 13:43:27 -0800 Message-Id: <9211232143.AA18328@penzance.cs.ucla.edu> From: cz@FICUS.CS.UCLA.EDU To: cz-dist@penzance.CS.UCLA.EDU Subject: CZ Digest v13 #4 (msgs 26-31) Errors-To: cz-request@FICUS.CS.UCLA.EDU Status: RO The Convergence Zone Date: 23 November 1992 Volume: 13 Issue: 4 Topics: (26) Editorial cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu (27) Future of Amiga Version 72330.1244@compuserve.com (28) Re: BB Coastal Shelling d9bertil@dtek.chalmers.se (29) Annex F Update tek@penzance.cs.ucla.edu (30) HDS Questions lapointe@mv83a.nusc.navy.mil (31) PC 1.32 Comments zen%hophead@canrem.com "The Convergence Zone" (or just "CZ" for short) is an electronic mailing list for the discussion of the Harpoon naval wargame series and related topics. The interception software is a great improvement with 1 noted bug. If you select a target (even a land base) for attack with aircraft it will ask to increase speed for an intercept. 1.32 Comments: 1. First, thanks to 360 for putting this on the Internet. 2. The fuel/range problem is fixed except it does not seem to give you a 10% "bingo" fuel reserve. Anyone have any comments on this? 3. No lock ups so far! 4. I still seem to have the frustrating problem of missile intercepts not always working. In "The Heart of the Problem - Part 1" my Soviet task force was attacked by submarine-launched Harpoons. When the missles were detected they were well inside my missle range, yet nobody fired. Is there a reason for this behavior or is this a bug? This problem has been present since day one. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Dec 92 18:02:04 EST From: nsark00@ukcc.uky.edu (Neville B. It seems we are getting a lot of bug message articles. Does anyone want to take up where Greg Smith left off and become the official bug-report coordinator for CZ? The job would entail having people mail you messages and collate the messages and then send them to 360. You don't have to know much about debugging trivia, but you do have to insist people send you messages that you (and 360) can do something with (i.e., bug is repeatable, comes from the latest version, is described in enough detail, etc.). I am still getting a very infrequent "lock up and die" - the big red switch is needed to recover - but then, this machine crashes OS2.2 ... . I wonder how many of you have tried "Earnest" the 2nd of the IOPG SE problems? Something is obviously fairly wrong with my database because many of the ports are shown inland and one of the tanker groups has a course line heading north, while the group heads off southerly ... . However, ignoring the map, this scenario plays very well. However, Kharg Island seems far far too indestructible and effective at defending itself. I have launched countless ARM sorties against it and the other bases providing radar cover but have been unable to shift the ground radar coverage pattern. Sortie after sortie of TRAM guided have failed to get a single missile through. The first 4 missiles get taken out, the second salvo each time just disappears. A Maverick attack simply lost all the attacking aircraft - although they were attacking at VLow, as fast as they would go. Just how many air defence missiles does Kharg Island have and what are they? I started the attacks only after lots of ARM strikes. Also, how do you attack docked ships? I tried standoff loaded Vikings, without much luck. It came back with the "No Su Weapons", but not every time. Taking out the port allowed the ships to be attacked and taken out. This scenario seems to have "docked" ships which are 60 miles out from harbour? Using an ARM weaponload for the attack showed the ships as well as the port as potential targets. In the last CZ some-one remarked on the "increase speed" request given out for aircraft just launched to attack. I get this symptom and 2 more :- aircraft launched to ferry stay at home and need to be told to land at the ferry site. Also I kept losing patrol Tomcats, running out of fuel at the end of their patrol, on the way home. The bingo fuel reserve appears enough to get the patrol back to the nearest landing site -- but if they were launched from and have to land some-where further away, they can run out. Any-one else seen these problems or is my system really screwed up? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1992 13:27 GMT From: arhn6001@iruccvax.ucc.ie Subject: (44) Dipping Sonar Message-Id: I don't have either of my Data Annexes from "real" Harpoon to hand so I can't check the detection percentages for dipping sonars but they are rarely better than 30% and most dipping sonars and sonobouys have very short range. A dipping sonar will be affected by rotor downbeat, the chopper's movements and so on to a greater degree than a sonobouy. Also, Orion's usually drop patterns of sonobouys --- if the computer adaptation models this, then the P3 will almost always do a better job. FInally, the P3 can carry much more gear, so the operators have a better chance of filtering and analysing the signal they get back. There, of course, no substitute for a real game of Harpoon, 16 players with three plots and umpires who know the rules. Does this list totally revolve around the computer version, or any there any real wargamers out there in the CZ? Well, Carl? What's the offical word? I find it difficult to believe they'd intentionally fill a market with a faulty product and then drop it. That's a federal no-no. I believe "the lack of Amiga programmers in-house". I would seriously doubt the "small market". It's necessarily "small" at this time because of it's incompatibility. But, if I recall correctly, I believe it was actually Amiga World's "Game of the Year" a few years back. The Falklands, the Gulf and even the Libyan raid made use of IFR and there are many battleset scenarios where it would be invaluable. However, all of the scenarios I have tried have victory conditions which do not take into account aircraft losses. I'm afraid that I have got into the habit of making free use of one-way strikes. I use helicopters as "sucker bait" to pull attacking aircraft into missile range quite often too. Good job it isn't for real, lots of my friends are helicopter pilots ... . ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1992 16:46:28 -0500 (EST) From: creps@bronze.ucs.indiana.edu (Stephen A. Does anyone have any ideas? I've had something like that happen with 1.32 when I attempted a launch of some Tomahawks. The program seemed to lock up, although I was able to reboot from the keyboard. I kept restoring the game (saved at an earlier point), and it kept locking up. I got around the problem by instead sending in some F-18's with Harpoons. There is now a problem with the "land" pick for aircraft. If a aircraft is in a loiter mode and F6 is selected it will not always switch to cruise speed. The new path will appear and often the word "cruise" will appear on the unit status, but the speed remains at the loiter speed. If you don't manually change this using F2 your plane will run out of gas and crash. 2. Perhaps this next one is related to the first bug but, I'am having ASW helicopters run out of gas and crash that are set in formation patrols. I lost 6 helos this way on my last scenario. This one is very frustrating. Enhanced GUIK bugs: 1. All of the Swedish airfields to not have radar! 2. The fighter variant of the Viggen does not have an AIR to AIR load. 3. The default load for the fighter is empty. Related Questions: 1. Doesn't Sweden have a Antiradar missle? There is not one listed under the GUIK database. 2. It is disappointing that they did not include the Swedish Draken in the enhanced GUIK Battleset. It has been upgraded and is still operational in Sweden. Would anyone give there ideas on a rough equivalent?. My first guess would be the F-4, but it is faster and carries a larger bomb load. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Dec 92 9:19 BST From: postmaster@manadon-engineering-college.ac.uk (Keith Wain) Subject: (50) One-Way Missions Message-Id: I stand corrected, Harpoon does care about aviators! In my previous message (sent only yesterday ...). I talked of the value of one-way air missions and their low cost -- I have now found a scenario to disprove that. You can lose by too many suicide missions ... . I have found out also why Kharg Island (in the Earnest Scenario for SE IOPG) is so powerful. I will not say why, in case it spoils it for others, but this scenario is well worth trying out. It has given me a number of ideas for using in the board game. One other thing I think that I have observed is that Harpoon (PC Version HARP386.exe) seems to crash not at all if I do frequent saves. Now whether this is coincidence + the application of the good old law that if you back up you only prove that you need not have bothered, I could not say. Certainly since getting into the habit of backing up every 10 minutes or so I have had several evenings with no crashes or lockups at all. Previously, but still with the same hardware/software configuration, I would have put money on at least one lock-up per evening. Essentially, the current state of CIS aviation ships is very poor. Items drawn from: "Carrier Conundrum Continues" (Nov 92 USNI Proceedings) "Appearances were Deceiving" (Dec 1992 USNI Proceedings) "Alerts" (SITREP 13) Ulyanovsk - construction stopped around Nov 91, scrapping started on 3 Feb 92, about 20% scrapped now Kuznetsov - assigned to Northern Fleet, may not be completely fitted out (including some of her radar systems), no embarked air group, poor support facilities Varyag - varying reports (these might be parallel efforts): 1. to be completed for Russia and: a) assigned to the Northern Fleet, possibly a pier for it under construction in Murmansk b) assigned to the Pacific Fleet, according to Navy statements 2. offered for sale to China or India, or already sold to China; this theory has a number of variants, including: a) it is to be completed at Nikolayev or completed by the purchaser b) equipment is or is not available to complete it as designed c) Russia, Ukraine or both are to receive the proceeds 3. offered for sale as scrap Kiev - assigned to Northern Fleet, needs overhaul Minsk - assigned to Northern Fleet, needs overhaul Novorossiysk - assigned to Pacific Fleet, suffered from fire on 24 Aug 92, unable to operate due to shortages Gorshkov - assigned to Northern Fleet Moskva - possibly the same as Lenningrad Lenningrad - decomissioned and offered for scrap Other factors: 1. The only shipyard (Nikolayev) currently capable of doing overhauls to these ships is in the Ukraine. 2. The only carrier aviation training center (Saki) is in the Ukraine. 3. The VSTOL Yak-38MP Forger is obsolete and the development of the follow-on Yak-141 Freestyle is in big trouble, if not dead already. 4. The (recently retired) Admiral Chernavin has stated that Yak-44 aircraft was chosen over the An-74 for carrier based AEW. Item from "Appearances were Deceiving" (Dec 1992 USNI Proceedings) The article challenges the notion that Soviet CHG and V/STOL carriers were evolutionary steps to "big deck" USN-style carriers. It states that a 80kton carrier design existed in the Soviet Union in 1973. The design concept was derailed by bureacratic and institutional opposition. This resulted in the much smaller CHGs and V/STOL carriers seen in today's Russian Navy. Only much later were big deck proponents able to make the case to build ships such as the Ulyanovsk. However, the resources for such ships disappeared when the Soviet Union collapsed and now the Ulyanovsk is being scrapped. Summary of "Alerts" (SITREP 13) On 14 May 92, Boris Yeltsin announced the Kirov class cruisers will be renamed to honor Czarist heroes. The new names are Admiral Ushakov (Kirov), Admiral Lazerev (Frunze), Admiral Nakhimov (Kalinin) and Petr Velikiy (Yuri Andropov). Most UK Type 21 (Amazon) class frigates are in poor condition. Some have had their sonars removed. Only a few Leander class frigates remain in service, and these will be retired soon. The USN is experimenting again with using SSNs in direct support of surface ships. -ted Ted Kim Internet: tek@penzance.cs.ucla.edu UCLA Computer Science Department UUCP: ...!{uunet|ucbvax}!cs.ucla.edu!tek 3804C Boelter Hall Phone: (213)825-8524 Los Angeles, CA 90024 FAX: (213)825-2273 ------------------------------ Date: Tue 8 Dec 1992 19:17:46 PST From: cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu (CZ Administrator) Subject: (52) Volume 13 Index Message-Id: Volume Issue Date Messages Author - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13 1 21 October 1992 (1) Editorial cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu (2) Mac Version Numbers as4y+@andrew.cmu.edu (3) PC 1.3 Weapon Range Bug malloy@nprdc.navy.mil (4) PC 1.3 Varying Sonar Specs s905066@otto.bf.rmit.oz.au (5) Sonar Books fontana@pavia.infn.it (6) PC v1.32 in UK (again) coates@vax.lse.ac.uk (7) Change Loadouts? lapointe@mv83a.nusc.navy.mil (8) PC File Formats 100113.2052@compuserve.com (9) Wargame Scenario 9205875m@ntx.city.unisa.edu.au 2 30 October 1992 (10) Editorial cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu (11) PC 1.3 Sonar, Smartdrive s905066@otto.bf.rmit.oz.au (12) Re: Mac Version Numbers ummorea0@ccu.umanitoba.ca (13) Re: PC 1.3 Weapon Range gjb@fig.citib.com (14) Land-based SAMs mckinney@athena.mit.edu (15) Using Blip Enhance andrew.stevens@prg.oxford.ac.uk (16) Gunfire Bug Cured? janm@dubhe.docs.uu.se (17) Miniatures Source, etc. pmadden@fnal.fnal.gvo (18) Recent Naval Developments tek@penzance.cs.ucla.edu (19) Mac Questions brockr@admina.rferl.org 3 11 November 1992 (20) Editorial cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu (21) BBS Connections lapointe@mv83a.nusc.navy.mil (22) Amiga Status rohde@adcalc.fnal.gov (23) Where to get Mac IOPG brockr@admina.rferl.org (24) BB Coastal Shelling mckee@hpmckee.fc.hp.com (25) Amiga Editor Workaround bull@vaxc.cc.monash.edu.au 4 23 November 1992 (26) Editorial cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu (27) Future of Amiga Version 72330.1244@compuserve.com (28) Re: BB Coastal Shelling d9bertil@dtek.chalmers.se (29) Annex F Update tek@penzance.cs.ucla.edu (30) HDS Questions lapointe@mv83a.nusc.navy.mil (31) PC 1.32 Comments zen%hophead@canrem.com 5 5 December 1992 (32) Editorial cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu (33) v1.32 from GEnie 72330.1244@compuserve.com (34) Uncompressing .Z Files coates@vax.lse.ac.uk (35) Mac 1.2 Questions ummorea0@ccu.umanitoba.ca (36) PC 1.3 Bugs/Questions dp@wx.gtegsc.com (37) Amiga Battlesets? kfr@pro-freedom.cts.com (38) Scenario Editor Version dp@wx.gtegsc.com (39) PC GIUK Memory Usage lapointe@mv83a.nusc.navy.mil (40) PC 1.3/1.32 Comments dp@wx.gtegsc.com (41) In-flight Refueling nsark00@ukcc.uky.edu 6 8 December 1992 (42) Editorial cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu (43) PC 1.32 + IOPG HDS postmaster@manadon-engineering (44) Dipping Sonar arhn6001@iruccvax.ucc.ie (45) Miniatures Update tek@penzance.cs.ucla.edu (46) Re: Future of Amiga rohde@adcalc.fnal.gov (47) Re: In-flight Refueling postmaster@manadon-engineering (48) Re: PC 1.3 Bugs/Questions creps@bronze.ucs.indiana.edu (49) More PC 1.32 Bugs dp@wx.gtegsc.com (50) One-Way Missions postmaster@manadon-engineering (51) Recent Naval Developments tek@penzance.cs.ucla.edu (52) Volume 13 Index cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu (53) CZ Guidelines cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue 8 Dec 1992 19:17:47 PST From: cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu (CZ Administrator) Subject: (53) CZ Guidelines Message-Id: Guidelines for The Convergence Zone Last Update: 20 November 1992 Author: tek@penzance.cs.ucla.edu (Ted Kim - CZ Moderator) Welcome to The Convergence Zone! Goal ---- "The Convergence Zone" (or just "CZ" for short) is an electronic mailing list for the discussion of the Harpoon naval wargame series and related topics. The Harpoon products include Harpoon, Captain's Edition Harpoon, Computer Harpoon, Harpoon SITREP, and various supplements for the print and computer versions. Naval topics are discussed in so far as they are related to the game or provide useful background. The goal of CZ is interesting discussions and material and just plain fun. Submissions ----------- Messages for submission to the mailing list should be sent to "cz@ficus.cs.ucla.edu". CZ is published in digest form. Volumes 10 and higher are in RFC 1153 compatible format. Earlier volumes are in an incompatible format. All messages are subject to possible rejection or editing by the moderator. Rejection should be pretty rare and only occurs if the subject of a message is wholly inappropriate or if the message is offensive. (Please keep flames to a minimum!) Editing should be pretty rare also. Reasons for editing include (but are not necessarily limited to) extreme length, obvious errors and really bad formatting. Any editing will be noted. Please double check your submissions for errors and try to stay within 80 characters per line. Administration -------------- Administrative requests should be sent to "cz-request@ficus.cs.ucla.edu". Once in a while, the moderator has to do real work, so please be patient. If several people on the same machine receive the CZ, please try to organize a local redistribution. When you signup, I will send you back issues from the current volume. Previous volumes are available from the archives. Archives -------- After each volume is complete, it along with an index is placed on the archive sites for access by anonymous FTP. The archive sites and the path to the Harpoon directory root is listed below. North America sunbane.engrg.uwo.ca (129.100.100.12): pub/harpoon Europe ftp.cs.vu.nl (192.31.231.42): harpoon The CZ archive is in the "cz" subdirectory under the Harpoon directory root. The CZ archive volumes are named v1.Z, v2.Z, etc and are in UNIX compress format. The index files are named i1.Z, i2.Z, etc. A few other items appear under separate names. The complete list is in the file "INDEX". Please be polite and don't FTP during peak load hours during a workday. UNIX Compress Format -------------------- Unix compress format files (.Z extension) can be restored using the proper utility for your system. These utilities and where to get them (i.e., anonymous FTP archives) are listed below. The information was derived from the compression summary found on ftp.cso.uiuc.edu:/doc/pcnet/compression (8 Oct 92 revision) and the comp.compression newsgroup FAQ (29 Oct 92 revision). Amiga: compress ftp.cso.uiuc.edu (128.174.5.59): /amiga/fish/f0/ff051.lzh Mac: MacCompress3.2 sumex-aim.stanford.edu (36.44.0.6): /info-mac/util/maccompress-32.hqx PC: comp430d wuarchive.wustl.edu (128.252.135.4): /mirrors/msdos/compress/comp430d.zip garbo.uwasa.fi (128.214.87.1): /pc/unix/comp430d.zip PC: u16 ftp.cso.uiuc.edu (128.174.5.59): /pc/exec-pc/u16.zip UNIX: uncompress, zcat uncompress is a standard UNIX command; if unavailable, try using this package: wuarchive.wustl.edu (128.252.135.4): /packages/compression/compress-4.1.tar Scenarios --------- User written scenarios for Amiga, Macintosh and IBM-PC versions of the computer game are also stored on the archive site under the the Harpoon directory root in subdirectories "amiga", "mac" and "pc" respectively. Each directory contains a file called "INDEX" and one called "README". The "INDEX" file lists the contents of that directory. The "README" file describes the scenario formats, procedures for uploading, who administrates the directory, etc. The scenarios themselves are in compressed files. If "README" and "INDEX" are sufficiently long they too will be in UNIX compress format as "README.Z" and "INDEX.Z".
