Hello fellow Harpooners, I have a few questions for all of you out there, 1. Three days ago I got a newsletters from my favorite computershop in Holland and listed in the section Simulation I found Harpoon III from 360 to be released soon (it was not battleset III for HII, which I just bought) Does anyone know anything about it? the guys from the shop only knew about a release date (winter!) 2. Due to lack of steaming power on my maschine (486-50) I still use HC with some patches, does anyone know whether new patches are coming out or of they are already relaesed whe I can find them? 3. Included in the HC package is a multi-player version of HC, did anyone try that option and if so does it work? (and how?) 4. I seem to loose aircraft while playing HCwin, one moment they are happy hunters next moment gone! I did not loose them due to lack of fuel or enemy fire, they just vanished! Does this mean I got an bug? 5. While playing 'Convoy Ho' from the designers' series (nacv-set) I set up a ASW-patrol using the formation editor in the ASW ring of one of my US-airfields, suddenly the airfield moved into the sea!! (another bug?) 6. I know EMCOM is really important, but if a very large convoy is trying to get to the other side of the ocean at the higest speed possible, does it really make that much of a difference, I would probably sent ASW aircraft ahead to hunt for anything, and if possible to buid a large AAW screen around the path of the convoy, in Convoy Ho I put up a almost permanent radar screen spanning from St John's to England using 2 E-3's and 8 flights of 2 - 4 Eagles and Tornados and not one aircraft survived trying to get passed this screen, I found it totally unneccessary to use EMCOM for the two convoy's.(Lack of resistance?) Comments? I still think Harpoon Classic is the best one to play, but all I hear is HII (oh I really need a CRAY to get some speed into HII, and still it is sooooo slow!( yes VooVoo sorry I used your words) Are there still people out there who want to talk about HC or even earlier versions? (or I just >can't) It's not always possible to tell. If you're emiting and within the passive detection range of the opposing forces sensors, they'll know you're there. Or if you're within the range of their emiting sensors it's a good bet they have you. If you think they know you're there try making course changes and watch for the reaction. If they change course to intercept, you have your answer. Otherwise, the first indication is "Vampire! Vampire! Vampire!" >3. In using the formation editor I assigned a chopper to patrol for ASW >patrol. Three choppers launched, and when I turned two of them back to >base, they launched again after 30 min of refuel and rearm. Why? In all probility you inadvertently assigned the three when you laid out the patrol area. The Formation Editor will ask you how many A/C to assign to a patrol zone. If you want something different than the default number, which is always the maximum number of A/C of that type on that unit, then you need to change it. If you don't want them relaunching again in 30 minutes, then delete the patrol zone and reconfigure it for the number of A/C's you really want. >4. After this, I needed all three choppers, so I wanted to clear them all >from assignments, but no way. How can you unassign an aircraft which is >patrolling a PZ in the formation? Select the unit you want to detach from within the Formation Editor. There is an icon with a large circle in the lower left corner with an arrow pointing to a smaller circle in the upper right corner. Select that icon and the unit is detached and you can do whatever you want with it. This problem kind of annoyed me since it seems to be more complicated than it need be. Apparently, telling an aircraft assigned to a PZ to return to base does just that without deleting its mission. In order to clear patrolling aircraft for reassignment it is necessary to use the Mission Editor. Find the aircraft you want to clear in the Mission Editor and select "Unassign". This has worked for me although it is not quick nor easy. +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Wayne S. You might have a look at any of the books on the Falklands war, where GB sent both it's CVs to war. I don't have details handy, but the escorts were a mix of frigates and destroyers (I don't think the Royal Navy has anything like what we call cruisers), with at least one nuclear sub. There were supply vessels as well. If you are thinking of playing H2's Falkland's scenario (the only one I got into before I got disgusted with the speed of the game and sold it), try setting up some airborne early warning of some sort. Lots of stuff I've read indicates that lack of AEW was one of the major shortcomings of the campaign and might have saved a couple of ships from decorating the bottom of the South Atlantic. Harpoon II requires 256 color SVGA display (VESA?), the minimum resolution is 640x480. If your computer can use 640x480x256 mode, H2 should work. Gray scale display shouldn't be problematic, because the palette can be edited to suit your needs. > 2) My notebook only has a 486SLC25 processor. Is this too puny? > 3) I only have 4 meg of ram. Is this too annorexic? I used to play H2 on 386/387DX25 with 4MB and had good time. It was _very_ slow on larger scenarios, and acceptable on smaller ones. Currently I have 486DX2/66 with 8MB and it is still on slower side on some scenarios. I don't know how well it works on 486SLC25. > 4) I have limited space on my 40 meg hard-drive (disk-doubled to 80). > Is it mandatory to install the full 25 meg of Harpoon 2? H2 requires 25MB during installation, after that it takes 19MB. The use of disk space can be cut down to 10-12 MB by deleting some files. If you delete animations (*.ani ?) you'll save few MB's (remember to edit the config file and set animations off). Also the ship, plane and sub pictures can be deleted (plane/ship/subpic.res ?). H2 works, but if you click "show picture" on database, you'll get error message. > 5) Does it run from Windows? I haven't tried. > 6) Are there any other options besides buying a new computer? (ie. does > Harpoon Classic or Carriers at War 2 overcome any of the above problems?) I have Harpoon Classic for Dos and (I think) it uses 640x350x16 EGA graphics, runs fine on "all 386 or better computers", but it requires 18 MB (disk version). Anyone with Harpoon Classic for Windows? The problem could be in the colors. Palette in Harpoon Classic can't be edited, and blue/red combination might cause some problems. If you use military style symbols, the shape (round vs. angled) shows the side of the plane/ship/sub, but bases are still identified by colors. My buddy and I recently purchased the Harpoon Classic CD while at MacWorld in Boston. While we've both put about 20-30 hours in on the game so far, we still are having some problems. First of all, how do you do an amphibious landing? We have both destroyed the targets, and have mostly destroyed the targets, but cannot seem to get the landing force to the target (via the planes). Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to know what the differences are between Harpoon and Harpoon II. We originally purchased the CD Classic game with the hopes of being able to upgrade to the HarpoonII. Now we find that this is not possible. So, I would like to know if it would be worth buying Harpoon II. Thank you in advance.
